author’s comments:
This was the second short play I had written in over ten years, and I did it right on the heels of the first short play I had written in over ten years, and once more because I was asked to be a part of the SHOTZ festival post-pandemic. I wrote the whole thing in one sitting during a Saturday afternoon at home. Even though I often say that I am not a huge fan of the short play form, I’ve either changed that opinion or my work in said form has just gotten better because “We Have Fun” is actually a really solid short play with a fun but also fairly simple premise and yet plenty of pathos and twists for the actors to dig their teeth into. The prompt had been Maxxing and the line we had to use was “Have you ever thought of…” but the idea more or less came from God and is my own weird little homage to the original Clash of the Titans film and the way the gods in that version would move human figures around an ampitheatre while making decisions about their lives. I orginally though of making He and She gods in specific, but no combination, from Athena and Loki to Coyote and Brigid had the right flare. So, they basically became God and the Devil. Why mess with a classic?
